The Defender name is often misapplied to all coil-sprung Land Rover utilities, but it was not officially introduced until 1990 with the launch of the 1991 model year. That milestone brought a host of updates, most notably the new 200Tdi direct-injection diesel engine – now standard across the 90, 110 and 130 variants.
Though designed primarily as a working vehicle, the Defender range included passenger-carrying Station Wagons, which gained popularity following the success of the Range Rover. County versions, offering more comfort and equipment, helped broaden the model’s appeal. In later years, as demand for commercial and military variants declined in the face of modern Japanese competition, Land Rover increasingly focused on these lifestyle-oriented models – a strategy that proved hugely successful and paved the way for the New Defender launched in 2018.
Built between 1990 and 2016, the Defender evolved steadily, if not continuously. A succession of major specification changes brought a wide range of engines, transmissions, interiors and body configurations. Numerous limited and special editions further enriched – and complicated – the Defender story.
For owners and enthusiasts seeking to restore a Defender to original factory specification, this book provides a definitive guide to production changes, with insights into what changed, when and why. Accompanied by photography from Simon and Otis Clay, Factory-Original Land Rover Defender showcases outstanding examples of the model, highlighting correct details and factory original features. Land Rover historian James Taylor covers all Defender 90, 110 and 130 models – including North American and special editions – while a dedicated appendix helps identify factory options and accessories.
