The Jeep brand is known the world over for its pioneering light 4x4, introduced during the Second World War as a versatile military runabout. After the war, its makers capitalised on the Jeep’s reputation and capabilities to develop a growing range of civilian models, particularly for rural and light industrial use. By the late 1940s, the line-up included leisure and light truck variants, and during the 1950s Jeep became firmly established both in the USA and in export markets, where models were often assembled under licence.
Originally a product of the Willys-Overland company, Jeep became hot property in the early 1950s and was acquired by the Kaiser Corporation, becoming Kaiser-Willys. From the early 1960s, Kaiser developed the marque to include not only specialist vehicles but also everyday transport and high-performance variants.
In 1970, Jeep changed hands again – this time to AMC, which expanded its “everyday” and performance offerings and used special editions and marketing-led variants to boost appeal. Financial troubles led to a controlling stake being acquired by Renault, which brought a European sensibility to new model development while respecting the marque’s American roots.
Another transformation came in 1987 with Chrysler’s takeover. Chrysler developed Jeep into a core SUV brand, and following the 1998 merger with Daimler-Benz, the company entered the 21st century under DaimlerChrysler ownership.
This book covers the full Jeep catalogue up to 2005 – when new K-series models began to replace earlier J designations, and just before the DaimlerChrysler partnership was dissolved. It celebrates the extraordinary variety of Jeep models built both in the USA and abroad, and provides a detailed and accessible reference for enthusiasts navigating the rich and often complex story of the Jeep marque.
